Sondex tool underwent a significant "shock transient" when a piece of pipe attached to a chain fell from high above and struck it.

The tool has 40 spring-loaded fingers (arms) that expand outward to contact the inside wall of the pipe. As the tool is pulled through the well, each finger continuously measures the distance to the pipe wall with very high resolution. The measurements are combined to create a 360° image of the pipe's internal surface, similar to "unwrapping" the inside of the casing into a flat image.

The 40-arm MIT is used to identify:
Internal corrosion and pitting
Metal loss
Scale and paraffin buildup
Holes or perforations
